Bringing the joy of reading to children in Pampanga

Children must be given the opportunity to learn more beyond the four corners of a classroom, and school libraries are one of the efficient ways that can help facilitate this. The quality of education of public elementary school students are embedded in the kind of facilities and resources that are accessible to them. One of the primary facilities that a school should have is a functional library. However, many public elementary schools still do not have libraries, and those that do have yet to make their libraries child-friendly and functional. Thus, it is no longer surprising that we continue to still have many non-readers in our public schools.

The Acts of Hope for the Nation (AHON) Foundation responds to this need by opening more public elementary school libraries around the Philippines to provide Filipino children with relevant opportunities so they may gain more knowledge by practicing a culture of reading.

Recently, AHON Foundation together with former Pampanga Gov. Eddie “Among Ed” Panlilio and Sen. Teofisto “TG” Guingona III, opened two (2) child-friendly libraries in public schools in Pampanga – San Agustin Integrated School in San Fernando and San Juan Nepomuceno Elementary School in Guagua. The whole community, including the local government officials, barangay officers, alumni, PTA members and other stakeholders, attended the inauguration.
Unlike other groups who just donate books, AHON’s main condition for its donating more than P 350,000.00 worth of brand new books per school is for the community to work together to renovate and refurbish its existing library. This would mean providing enough tables, chairs and shelves that children can use as well as providing adequate lighting and ventilation that would make learning conducive for every child.
“Nagpapasalamat po kami na natupad na ang aming hiling na magkaroon ng library itong eskwelahan,” said Mrs. Marie Grace Ramos, Principal of San Agustin Integrated School.

According to Mrs. Leilani Capati, Principal of San Juan Nepomuceno Elementary School, they really want to put up a library but they do not have enough resources.
“Mabuti na lang po at andiyan kayo para tulungan kami sa matagal na naming pinapangarap na library. Makakatulong po talaga ito sa mga bata,” she said. Among Ed Panlilio, the former governor of the Province of Pampanga, stated that, “Kung ‘di lang din sa kooperasiyon niyong lahat, hindi tayo magkakaroon ng library. Congatulations sa inyong lahat!”

On a related note, Sen.
Even when libraries are provided, they cannot be functional if the children are not encouraged to enter the library and read the books that are now accessible to them. Mr. Hector O. Tagaysay, Chairman of AHON Foundation, encouraged the children to read the books and promised them that AHON will replace the books if they become worn-out.

To date, AHON Foundation opened 110 public elementary school libraries in different places such as La Union, Nueva Ecija, Camarines Sur, Quezon, Bulacan, Pampanga, Rizal, Leyte, Ilocos Sur, Isabela, Pangasinan, Laguna, Batangas, Ifugao and Metro Manila benefiting more than 500,000 public elementary pupils. AHON Foundation still believes and continues to work on providing functional and child-friendly libraries in the hope of uplifting the quality of education in the country.

Good News on a Monday

Monday isn't always the most popular day of the week, but we're happy to report that we're coming to you with good news today.

As if last week we didn't already receive a great number of donations, on Thursday, Ms. Kathleen Yao in behalf of 21st Century Steel Mill came to our office and dropped off their donation of children's magazines worth  Php112,000!

The magazines that were donated to us were Asian children's magazines with articles written by other kids from different parts of Asia. The magazines also included lots of colorful art work and creative writing submissions.

We're sure that these magazine donations will add life and more color to the new libraries we're opening in the upcoming months.

Another good thing we have to share is that we also partnered with Bagong Kulturang Pinoy Inc, a non-profit for literacy! We signed a MOA over the weekend with Ms. Alice Quilicot, their Executive Director. The reading seminar conducted by them will take place some time in October.

And finally, we're having a fundraiser this Friday!
AHON Foundation will be at Kaya Natin's R18: Kaya Natin Kung Kakayanin Mo Rin voters education concert on Friday, September 28. We will be selling drinks, the proceeds of which go to AHON Foundation. You can also sign up to be a volunteer at our booth during the event.

The concert will be at Amoranto Theater in Quezon City, and gates open at 6pm. Bands like 6Cyclemind, Never the Strangers, Peryodiko, Join the Club, Flying Ipis, and Circa will be playing. To find out more, here's the Event Page on Facebook

We hope to see you there! Don't forget to drop by our booth! :-)

As Always, Thank You For Your Book Donations!

We had a wonderful start of the week as on Monday, we received a book donation from Mrs. Mari Delfin! She donated several bundles of preloved books...

As well as brand new children's story books! Now don't get us wrong, preloved books always make us smile. But we loved these brand new books just as much.

Which is why again, it made us very happy when Ms. Claire Carolino, a college student taking up communication arts, personally dropped off these brand new story books yesterday morning before she went to school.

In terms of book donations, it has been a great week for us! We hope everyone else is having a great week as well.

Thank you for the Book Donations!

It was almost as though it rained books on us this week since for two days in a row we received book donations from two supporters of AHON Foundation!

Ms. Rosemary Jota contacted us a few weeks ago to ask what kind of books we accepted for our libraries. After a few days of back and forth correspondence we settled on a date to pick up her donation which was quite literally a whole car trunk's worth.
Ms. Jota says that while conducting general cleaning in the house she grew up she realized how much books they actually owned, and how these still could be put into good use. She donated several encyclopedia sets, stacks of general knowledge books, more than a couple of children's literature novels, and over a dozen story books.

The day after we picked up Ms. Jota's donation, Cid Jacobo, a long time volunteer of AHON foundation, dropped off a box worth of children's reference books. According to Cid these reference books were his favorite as a child, and he learned a lot from these in the past. He was even able to identify one specific book that he used to take with him everywhere when he was younger.
These books will find new homes in the three libraries that we are launching next week in Nueva Ecija. They will surely be utilized well in the new libraries of Entablado Elementary School in Cabiao, Sto. Cristo Elementary School in San Isidro, and Cuyapo Central School in Cuyapo.
