Being Magis

Students from a public school in Tagudin, Ilocos Sur take advantage of their new library
Crossing the river to bring the books to one of the recipient schools

A festive celebration welcomes AHONand the books and educational resources they bring.

Nothing could define better the hard work and perseverance of five schools from Tagudin, Ilocos Sur than magis. To get to Ambalayat Integrated School, students and teachers have to take a raft across the river or cross the hanging bridge. Isolated,  Pudoc West Integrated School is among the farthest school.
Tagudin Central School and Becques Community School lament the lack of classrooms. Libtong Community School  bemoans the lack of reference books that could be used in studying and teaching.

However, blessed with the indomitable spirit, the educators do all they can to equip their students with the necessary learning tools amid the difficulties.  Among the first to recognize the value of partnerships with the private sectors, Mayor Roque Versoza Jr. of Tagudin, Ilocos Sur taps Acts of Hope for the Nation (AHON) Foundation to lend a helping hand.

AHON Foundation mobilizes the entire community of parents, teachers and local officials in building the libraries. It empowers communities by letting them realize their important part in nation-building and by prompting people to action in a true bayanihan fashion. Serving as a proper incentive, AHON Foundation donates R2.5 million worth of quality, Time-Life reference books in English, Math and the Sciences to the five schools.

Thank you so much for featuring us last June 24, 2012, Manila Bulletin. Congratulations to the newest partner schools of AHON Foundation! :)

Bagong mga Libro

AHON Foundation mentioned in Harvey Keh's Abante column

Pudoc West, Ilocos Sur

The rocky road to Pudoc West Integrated School
The hardworking teachers of Pudoc West Integrated School
Students enjoying their new library and books.
Pudoc West Integrated School is among the most isolated and far-flung barangay in Ilocos Sur. But some of the most hardworking and resourceful people can be found here. Among the first to recognize the value of partnerships with the private sectors, through the leadership of Mr. Ram Valdez, they managed to bring in improvements to their school one at a time.

Through the same bayanihan, they managed to transform their library into a better learning resource center. The educators couldn't contain their joy when AHON Foundation delivered the new quality books. Congratulations Pudoc West Integrated School!

Becques Community School, undoubtedly blessed with the ease and charm of a provincial school, welcomes the AHON Foundation as we distribute the donated quality books worth half-a-million.

BCS, at first reluctant to accept the program because of a lack of room to be used as library, converted their health center into a library. Through "bayanihan", they, headed by the principal Ms. Cherry Navida, managed to make it more conducive to reading. It hadn't been easy but they did it. Congratulations for a job well done BCS! :)

AHON brings books to Ilocos sur

Magis (pronounced "màh-gis") is a Jesuit phrase that means "the more." It is taken from Ad majorem Dei gloriam, a Latin phrase meaning "for the greater glory of God." Magis refers to the philosophy of doing more, for Christ, and therefore for others. It is an expression of an aspiration and inspiration.

Indeed, although unknowingly, the teachers and parents of Libtong Community School (Tagudin, Ilocos Sur), as headed by Mrs. Cristina Lacasandile, exhibited magis at its finest. Not content with succesfully renovating their library, the teachers go out of their way to personally arrange the books. The students are lucky to have such hardworking teachers. Congratulations Libtong Community School!

To get to Ambalayat Integrated School, students and teachers have to take a raft or cross the hanging bridge. :Last June 4, AHON Foundation did the same in order to bring the books to Ambalayat.

Farthest and isolated, the teachers and parents, under the leadership of Mr. Henry Limon, created new colorful bookshelves, tables and chairs using recycled materials. Kudos for having such incredible resourcefulness and ingenuity!

AHON trains teachers

“Maswerte ang ibang mga batang nagsisipag-aral sa mga private schools. Hindi katulad ng mga bata namin na minsan wala nang oras para maglagi pa sa library para magbasa. Minsan nagmamadali nang umuwi dahil tutulong pa sila sa kanilang mga magulang, magpapakain pa sila ng kanilang mga nakakababatang kapatid, maghahanap-buhay pa sila para sa kanilang pamilya”, laments Mrs. Cecille Marquez, a public school teacher from Marikina High School.

This is the challenge that faces all the public school teachers all over the country. For the assigned librarians, their burdens are doubled because they also handle teaching loads on top of their library responsibility. Good thing that there are still hardworking, resourceful and creative teachers who continue to work harder to ensure that their students will be getting the best education possible.

In an effort to equip our teachers with skills and bolster their potential in creatively harnessing their library, Acts of Hope for the Nation (AHON) Foundation in cooperation with Ateneo de Manila University-Rizal Library conducted a two-day basic librarianship training seminar last April 16-17, 2012.

Congratulations to the  twenty-four delegates, coming from Quezon city, Marikina, Pasig, Manila and from as far as Nueva Ecija! Thank you so much to our facilitators from Ateneo de Manila University Ms. Susan Pador, Mr. Gerry Laroza, Ms. Pam Albania, Ms. Mikee Soriano, Ms. Solvie Nubla-Lee and Ms. Lourdes David!

New books for Juan Sumulong ES

The hardworking stakeholders present during the first meeting

Students enjoys their new library

The newly-refurbished library of Juan Sumulong Elementary School
As one of the oldest schools in Tondo, Manila, Juan Sumulong Elementary School's old library has books from 1902! Indeed, these books are more than old, condemned and outdated. Mrs. Angelina Mojica, the principal of the school, and AHON Foundation sought to remedy that by working together in renovating the new library and donating new reference books.

From the get-go, the stakeholders of the school had been ever present during consultations, renovations and until the inauguration. Within a month, through working together, the school managed to transform their library into a colorful and children-friendly library.

Juan Sumulong Elementary ended the school year 2011-2012 with a bang as it inaugurated the new library last March 26, 2012. Congratulation for a job well done! :)

New Libraries for Taguig

True to the spirit of bayanihan, AHON Foundation partnered with two more public elementary schools in Taguig. The 56th and 57th adopted libraries at Daang Harin Elementary School and Eusebio C. Santos Elementary School, respectively, will benefit about 4,000 students.

For Daang Hari Elementary School. located in a depressed area in the middle of a public market, the coming of AHON Foundation is a blessing.

"As you can see, you wouldn't even know our school exists unless you know exactly where to look", Mrs. Rebecca Anonuevo, the school principal, said pertaining to the school's location. "We have a huge student population but we lack school facilities and learning materials. In spite of that, I am proud to say that we are a performing school. We will surely use this library and take care of it"

Arthaland Inc, a real-estate agency based in Taguig, joins AHON Foundation in its advocacy and adopts the two public elementary schools. They had the opportunity to work with the teachers and students and to understand the public educational system first-hand. Thank you so much Arthaland team!
